Department of Interior of the Government of Catalonia – Mossos d’Esquadra
Mossos d’Esquadra is the police force with full jurisdiction in the territory of Catalonia (Spain), a region with around 8 million inhabitants. Nowadays Mossos d’Esquadra has 17.881 police officers divided in several central and regional departments that give service to all Catalonia.
TEDAX – CBRNe Unit of the Mossos d’Esquadra Police is responsible for analysing and neutralizing two types of explosive devices: Industrially manufactured military devices and improvised devices used by criminals, armed groups or terrorists. With a broaden experience in the field, the CBRNe Unit have to handle with different specialties, analysing and manipulating devices with Nuclear, Radiological, Chemical or Biological risks to people or property. Currently the TEDAX- CBRNe Unit tasks include planned services requiring support from other units and deactivating thousands of Civil War military devices found across Catalonia. Their functions are prevention, neutralization of explosive devices, support in preventive searches during events, inspection of objects or vehicles, bomb threats, collection, and destruction of pyrotechnics, specialized preparation in various areas, and the use of remote deactivation vehicles (VDR), among others.
Mossos d’Esquadra is firmly committed to European research and collaboration in order to improve the efforts to prevent and fight criminality, and has participated or participates in a number of European Commission Seventh Framework Programme (FP/) and H2020 secure societies projects as an end user, as well as it has participated in several projects of the EC DG Home Affairs and other EC DGs like Justice, Freedom and Security, on a variety of topics in the field of security.
